Dr Tavis Read

Overview

Dr Tavis Read is an Australian-trained specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons. His clinical practice specialises in surgical oncology and reconstructive microsurgery. In particular, he has sub-specialty interests in the treatment of melanoma, sarcoma and other soft tissue malignancies, head and neck and breast reconstruction, and complex lower limb trauma.

Dr Read has held dual consultant appointments in the Departments of Surgery at both the Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital and Mater Hospital Brisbane. He completed his surgical education and training as an accredited registrar in both Queensland and Victoria. This included time across institutions, including the PA Hospital, Mater Hospital Brisbane, Queensland Children’s Hospital, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane, as well as Austin Health and Peninsula Health in Melbourne. Following this he undertook a dedicated clinical fellowship in surgical oncology and reconstructive microsurgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Additionally, he completed research fellowships in surgical oncology within the Upper GI/Soft Tissue and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Units at the PA Hospital.

Dr Read is passionate about the investigation and treatment of skin cancer and soft tissue malignancies. He completed a PhD through the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2020, focusing on the clinical management of cutaneous melanoma. His research evaluated treatments, streamlined management strategies, and introduced novel therapeutics for advanced locoregional melanoma. He has successfully secured multiple competitive research grants and continues to engage in collaborative research projects with UQ and the PA Hospital.

Dr Read is actively engaged in medical education. As a Senior Lecturer at the UQ Faculty of Medicine, he actively supervises researchers, medical students, resident medical officers, and specialist registrars. Outside of work, Dr Read enjoys spending quality time with his young family, travelling and has personal interests in cycling and running.
