The College recognises that there is a shortage of trained and skilled local specialists in many developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region. This shortage severely reduces these countries' capacity to deliver surgical and medical care to their populations.
The overarching goal of the Global Health Scholarship Program is to improve the health outcomes for disadvantaged communities in the region, by providing training opportunities to promising individuals who will contribute to the long-term development of surgical and medical capacity in their country.
COVID-19 impact on the 2020 RACS Scholarship and Grant Program
The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic has impacted the ability for a number of 2020 Scholarship and Grant Program recipients to progress their scholarship, grant or Fellowship as planned.
To support current recipients, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Board of Council has approved additional flexibility, allowing application for extension, with the completion of scholarships, grants or Fellowships due by December 2021. Alternatively, unused funds may be repaid to RACS.
