What we do

When Timor-Leste gained independence in 2001, there were no nationally qualified surgeons and few health workers had the skills needed to provide essential and emergency medical care to the Timorese community. Since then, the College has provided extensive clinical teaching, mentoring and training for Timorese doctors, nurses and allied health workers.

The Program has helped train Timor-Leste's five general surgeons, first ophthalmologist, first medical anaesthetist, first burns management and cleft lip specialist and twenty-one nurse anaesthetists. In addition, nine doctors successfully completed Post Graduate Diplomas in Surgery, Anaesthesia and Paediatrics. Since 2001, visiting clinical teams to Timor-Leste have provided over 47,000 consultations and over 11,000 operations.

The RACS Timor-Leste Program works with the Ministry of Health, the National University of Timor-Leste and other key partners to deliver post graduate diplomas and a Masters of Medicine (Paediatrics). Foundation Year training programs assist to develop the required skills to work in Community Health Centres throughout Timor-Leste.

A full-time general surgeon, anaesthetist, O&G specialist and internal medicine specialist are all based at the National Hospital in Dili.
