Māori are the tangata whenua (land owners) of Aotearoa New Zealand and have unique rights under Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi). Te Tiriti o Waitangi formalises the relationship between Māori and the Crown and provides a foundation for policy development in New Zealand and means Māori values, traditions and practices are protected. It legitimises settler presence in New Zealand and governance by the British Crown.
