From 1st January 2020 the Orthopaedic Surgery Board of New Zealand no longer accepts MALT reports.

Trainees in this program are welcome to use MALT to record procedures. Please be aware that MALT reports are not accepted by the Board of Orthopaedic Surgical Training. Trainees should check with the Board to ensure they are meeting the reporting requirements of the SET program.


Trainees are allocated a SET - Orthopaedic Surgery (AoNZ) logbook. This logbook uses the SNOMED CT-AU reference set with specific terms identified by the Board of Orthopaedic Surgical Training to be included in the MALT logbook summary report for Specialist International Medical Graduates. These terms are known within the MALT system as board reporting terms. The MALT logbook summary report will only show procedure counts for these board reporting terms. A report listing all procedures can be generated via the MALT custom report tool, in the 'All Procedures Logged Report' tab. 

Important: Neither report is valid for submission to the training board and they are for personal use only.

Trainees who have transferred from a different specialty, where access has been granted to MALT, will retain access to the logbook from that specialty for reporting.


MALT uses the terms Nominated Supervisor and Alternate Supervisor.

Nominated Supervisor: surgeon overseeing training
Alternate Supervisor: surgeon in theatre with you

There is no requirement for supervisors in Orthopaedic Surgery in Aotearoa New Zealand to use MALT.

Individual cases do not require supervisor approval from within the MALT system (see approval process below), but supervisors will be informed when a Trainee initially selects them in MALT.

If they wish, supervisors can view cases for the Trainees they are supervising and provide comments on specific cases.


Record cases done in accredited hospitals only.


The SET - Orthopaedic Surgery (AoNZ) logbook type utilises the SNOMED CT-AU procedure list with selected terms identified as board reporting terms (XLSX 9.68MB).

The MALT Logbook Summary Report will only show procedure counts for Board Reporting Terms.

A report listing all procedures can be generated via the MALT Custom Report Tool, All Procedures Logged Report tab.

Please note that both the Logbook Summary Report is for personal use only and are not valid for submission to the Training Board.

For cases where more than one surgical procedure has been undertaken, MALT allows multiple procedures to be recorded.

Approval process

Cases move through a non-supervisory workflow progression from "Draft" to "Completed."

  1. Fill in and save the case (Draft).
  2. Ensure all cases are marked as Complete (Completed).
  3. Reports can then be generated on MALT data. Note that these reports will not be accepted by the training board and are provided for personal use only

Rotation periods

'Rotation Period' is a mandatory field in MALT.  As MALT is provided to Aotearoa New Zealand Orthopaedic Surgery Trainees as a personal log/self-audit tool, this field is automatically populated with 'N/A.'
