Why a S/IMG Competency Committee?
The purpose of the S/IMG CC is to provide defensible, transparent and accountable decision-making related to S/IMG progression and Fellowship recommendation decisions. RACS aims to strengthen and integrate existing decision-making processes, aligning its approaches with international best practice and responding to significant regulatory reform. The Committee broadens decision-making responsibility beyond a small group of individuals, strengthening governance, reducing the risk of actual or perceived conflicts of interest, and enhancing organisational accountability.
What does the committee do?
The S/IMG CC provides independent and robust oversight of S/IMG assessment and decision-making processes. Its responsibilities include decisions relating to initial comparability, ongoing progression, decisions regarding EVOPP eligibility and completion, and the final determination of whether applicants have met the standards for specialist recognition and/or Fellowship. These decisions are evidence-informed, consistent, and aligned with graduate outcomes and regulatory requirements, supporting consistent standards of practice and patient safety across all nine RACS specialties.
Who should apply?
The Committee requires representatives from each surgical specialty who can contribute to high-quality decision-making. Applications are particularly encouraged from current and former Examiners, members of Surgical Training Boards and Committees, and Fellows with expertise in competency-based medical education, workplace-based assessment, assessment decision-making, accreditation, and surgical education leadership.
Membership is for an initial three-year term. The first meeting will be held in late September 2026, with establishment meetings held every four weeks thereafter.
From 2027 onwards, the S/IMG CC will meet at least every quarter, with additional meetings convened as required. Meetings will be approximately two hours long. There may be additional meetings required for interim decisions; however, decision-making processes will be structured to be timely and efficient, with careful consideration given to time commitments.
