The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Council yesterday voted in Dr Sally Langley as the College’s next President and Dr Lawrence (Lawrie) Malisano as next Vice-President.
Both Dr Langley and Dr Malisano will take up their new roles in May, after RACS’ Annual General Meeting.
RACS President Tony Sparnon said he was delighted to congratulate both Dr Langley and Dr Malisano on their new roles. “Both Sally and Lawrie are passionate about and dedicated to surgical education and training and will be excellent leaders of the College.”
Dr Langley is a New Zealand plastic surgeon who has worked in both public and private surgery in Christchurch for more than 30 years, and she is a former president of the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons.
Her work has covered the whole spectrum of plastic surgery including craniofacial, cleft lip and palate, head and neck, paediatric, reconstructive including microsurgery, hand surgery, as well as skin cancer and breast surgery.
Dr Langley has been involved with surgical education and training throughout her career. She was elected on to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) Council seven years ago and is currently Chair of the College’s Professional Development and Standards Board.
She was an examiner in plastic and reconstructive surgery for nine years and was the New Zealand deputy Chair of the Court of Examiners, the entity which conducts RACS Fellowship exam, for two years.
Dr Malisano is an orthopaedic surgeon based in Spring Hill, Queensland.
He is a past President of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and was elected as a RACS Councillor last year and is the College’s Chair of Professional Development.
Dr Malisano has an education role with the University of Queensland Medical School, as faculty on Regional, National and International Courses for Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is involved in research and implant development.
Dr Malisano is also a foundation member of the Anthroplasty Society of Australia and a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
