Who can apply?
To be eligible to apply for this grant, you must be:
- RACS Younger Fellow*AND
- have a major interest and accomplishment in basic or clinical sciences related to surgery.
* RACS Younger Fellows are those who have gained their Fellowship within the past ten years.
Past recipients are ineligible to reapply. -
Activity
The recipient must spend a minimum of three weeks in the USA. While there, they are required to:
- attend and participate in the ACS Annual Clinical Congress
- participate in the congress’ formal convocation ceremony
- visit at least two medical centres in North America before or after the congress to lecture and share clinical and scientific expertise with local surgeons.The academic and geographic aspects of the travel itinerary are to be finalised in consultation and agreement with the recipient and the president of the ANZ Chapter of the ACS prior to the commencement of travel. Any changes to the travel program require approval by the president and RACS.
Please note, your grant activity must commence after the closing date for applications but before the end of the following year (the grant year).

- an outline of how your activity will be of benefit to yourself, the ANZ Chapter of the ACS and RACS

Selection and payment
Selection
Written applications will be reviewed by members of the Scholarship and Grant Committee. Should two applicants be equal in merit, preference will be given to those who hold an academic appointment in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand and have not received additional funding from external bodies or have who have received the lesser amount of additional funding.Payment
Payment is made directly to the recipient in one instalment by 1 March in the grant year (following receipt of a valid invoice which will be requested by the Scholarships and Grants Team). -
Recipient obligations
All grant recipients will be required to provide an activity report at the end of the grant year.
The recipient is expected to make a brief (5-10 minute) presentation outlining their activity and including the impact this opportunity will make on surgery in Australia and New Zealand. It is expected this is presented at the ANZ Chapter of the ACS meeting at the RACS Annual Scientific Congress the following year. -

You may register as an applicant on RACS Unlock at any time, however you will be unable to apply until the Learning and Development Program application opening date. There is no need to re-register if you already have a RACS Unlock registration.
