Health care system
General overview of the Australian and New Zealand health care systems.
Australian health care system overview
The Australian health care system is designed to provide universal access to public health care while giving individuals a choice to obtain health care through the private sector. It is designed to provide:
- health care and financial protection to all citizens
- a mix of private and public healthcare providers.
Public hospitals are funded by the government; private hospitals are owned by for-profit or not-for-profit organisations, such as corporate operators and private health insurance funds.
