Health care system

The Australian health care system is designed to provide universal access to public health care while giving individuals a choice to obtain health care through the private sector. It is designed to provide:

• health care and financial protection to all citizens
• a mix of private and public healthcare providers.

Public hospitals are funded by the government; private hospitals are owned by for-profit or not-for-profit organisations, such as corporate operators and private health insurance funds.
