Provide specialist general surgical services to inpatient and ambulatory patients at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals

 

Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital serve as the principal tertiary hospital in the region, offering a comprehensive range of referral services across all specialist areas to Darwin, the Top End of the NT, Western Australia and South-East Asia.

 

In the role of General Surgery Specialist Clinician, your primary focus will be to provide care and advice on the management of patients with general surgical conditions to colleagues both within and outside the speciality, and those located in geographically isolated centres across the Northern Territory.

 

Your key duties will include the management of patient flow and conducting regular inpatient ward rounds and outpatient sessions, participating in routine and emergency after-hours care on a 24hr roster basis, and providing specialist opinions to referring medical practitioners. You will also be required to engage in continuous medical education including undergraduate and post graduate teaching, professional development, peer review, staff mentoring and training, and contributing to a culture of high-performing teams.

 

To be successful you require eligibility for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia and hold a current Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent. A passion for rural, regional and Aboriginal healthcare and an interest in and commitment to improving Indigenous health is essential.

Take the lead of the Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team.

 

Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital (RDPH) is the principle tertiary hospital within the region and provides a broad range of referral services in all specialist areas to Darwin, the Top End of the NT, Western Australia and South-East Asia.

 

As Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery you have direct line management of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team, including HRM responsibilities, direct supervision of Medical Officers, financial responsibility, department performance, and leadership of quality improvement activities. In addition, you will support divisional clinical governance, operations and implement strategic programs and the management of patient flow.

 

Reporting to the Director of Surgical Services and supporting the RHPD Executive team and Division of Surgery and Critical Care you will drive the implementation of clinical and organisational priorities, to provide safe, timely, efficient, effective and person-centred clinical services.

 

To be successful you are required to be eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia, a current Fellowship of RACS, recognition as a professional leader in the field of Plastic Surgery, proven track record in the pursuit of clinical excellence and the capability and commitment to delivering high-quality care to patients.

As Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, your primary objective is to provide leadership and direct line management of the ENT surgery department, including human resource management, supervision of medical staff and departmental performance. Your key duties will include the management of patient flow and demand management strategies, safety and quality, clinical audit and review, staff mentoring and training, and leading a culture of highperforming teams. In the role of Specialist Clinician Neurosurgery, your primary focus will be to provide care and advice on the management of patients with neurosurgery conditions to colleagues both within and outside the speciality. 
 
Your key duties will include the management of patient flow and conducting regular inpatient ward rounds and outpatient sessions, participating in routine and emergency after-hours care on a roster basis, providing specialist opinion to referring medical practitioners and engaging in continuous medical education including undergraduate and post graduate teaching, professional development, peer review, staff mentoring and training, and contributing to a culture of high-performing teams. You will also be responsible for ensuring a strategic approach is taken to the development of contemporary human resource practices including workplace health and safety, and equal employment opportunities. 

You will also be required to participate in the Department’s 24-hr roster to ensure the proper functioning of the service.  

To be successful you require eligibility for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia, hold a current Fellowship of a relevant Medical College, and be recognised as a professional consultant in the provision of Neurosurgery services. A commitment to improving Indigenous health and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment is essential. To be successful at the Senior level you would need to demonstrate at least 6 years’ service in medical practice as a Specialist Medical Officer.
