The Program

Applications to the Scholarships and Grants Program open annually in March and close in May.

  • Program policies and guidelines

Scholarships and grants are governed by their individual guideline along with the respective policies.
In accepting an offer for a scholarship or grant, successful applicants must agree to conditions outlined in the respective policies and guidelines.

View the Scholarships and Grants program policies:
    Research scholarship policy (PDF 584.32KB)
Research scholarship part-time policy (PDF 34.51KB)
Research scholarship leave policy (PDF 31.92KB)
Learning and Development grant policy (PDF 288.7KB)

Guidelines contain information specific to the scholarship or grant and are linked from the Policy heading on each scholarship and grant webpage.

Unless otherwise stated on each scholarship and grant guideline, scholarship and grant activity cannot commence prior to the closing date of applications.

  • Frequency of scholarships and grants

The number of scholarships and grants offered annually varies depending on funding requirements, strategic priorities and where guidelines stipulate a scholarship is not offered if it has an incumbent recipient. A number of scholarships and grants are funded through the Foundation for Surgery's return on investments which may provide greater returns in some years over others.

The shortlist of scholarships and grants on offer in an upcoming application round is available on the following webpages:
    Research scholarships
    Learning and Development grants

  • Our commitment to diversity and inclusion

We encourage applications from Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Māori and female applicants as we support RACS’ focus on:

    - recognising that people can experience disadvantage
    - continuing and enhancing initiatives designed to increase the participation of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori doctors in the practice of surgery
    - removing barriers to the participation of women in surgery.

To reduce the risk of bias and strive for equitable access to scholarships and grants, the program includes a number of bias mitigation measures including:

    - providing reviewers (selection panel members) with an online e-module mitigating bias in selection processes
    - de-identifying applications for review (by selecting to 'show' and 'hide' application forms)
    - providing a conflict of interest process within RACS Unlock whereby a reviewer can elect to be unassigned from scoring an application.

  • Benefits and value

The prestige of being awarded a RACS scholarship or grant is well recognised within the surgical community.

    Benefits may include:
    - mentorship, leadership and networking opportunities
    - publishing and presentation opportunities resulting from the completion of a research project
    - conference/scientific meeting attendance and presentation opportunities
    - professional development, course enrolment, further training and experience

    Value

Unless otherwise stated, the value for scholarships and grants is listed on the respective opportunity webpage in $AUD exclusive of GST.
  • RACS Unlock online application platform

Applications, selection, awarding and reporting are administered through the Scholarships and Grants online hub - RACS Unlock, hosted by Survey Monkey Apply.

Applicants are required to register with RACS Unlock to apply or complete assigned tasks on their dashboard. Reviewers (selection panel members) are also invited to register.
