Tasmanian Robotic Surgery Meeting

The RACS Tasmania Robotics in Surgery Meeting was held in Launceston on 18-19 March 2023. The meeting brought together fellows, SIMGs, trainees and industry professionals to discuss the latest advances in robotic surgery technology, techniques and its applications across various surgical specialties.

The meeting consisted of keynote speakers, presentations and discussion panels on topics such as robotic-assisted colorectal surgery, urologic surgery, gynaecologic surgery, and ENT surgery. Presenters dived deep into recorded surgical demonstrations showcasing the use of robotic systems in surgical procedures and the intricacies available from an end user perspective .

Attendees were able to have hands on experience with the robotic system DaVinci from Device Technologies and presentations were also given by Medtronic and IMRA. We were also honoured to have the Deputy Premier of Tasmania, Michael Ferguson attend and experience the robot himself.

Overall, the RACS Tasmania Robotics in Surgery Meeting was a successful event that provided a platform for sharing knowledge and promoting collaboration among the surgical community and industry professionals involved in robotic surgery. This will form part of the TAS State Committee advocacy priorities for 2023 (helping to secure a Robot for the LGH and RHH) to address the access inequality issues faced by those living in rural areas.

Hobart Drive featured the event and discussion around robots in surgery on Tuesday, 21 March 2023. Listen to Dr Richard Cetti, and Associate Professor Lih-Ming Wong from the 44.45 mark: https://www.abc.net.au/hobart/programs/drive/hobart-drive/102103244
