Overview

The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) Committee is a subcommittee of the Prevocational and Skills Education Committee (PSEC). It has direct responsibility for the effective organisation and delivery of the ATLS® course, which provides training on a fundamental system of trauma care for doctors of any discipline. Committee members and faculty are drawn from a diverse range of surgical and non-surgical specialties.

Note: This Committee was previously known as the Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) Committee until 31 December 2025.

Objectives

  • Oversee the conduct of the ATLS® program throughout Australasia according to the policy and standards of the ATLS® Subcommittee of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ASC COT)
  • Oversee the continued development of the ATLS® program throughout Australasia as required
  • Oversee the review of curriculum and materials necessary to the ATLS® program
  • Promote the promulgation of ATLS® in the Asia-Pacific region
  • Maintain a close professional and collaborative relationship with the ATLS® Subcommittee of the ACS COT and the broader ATLS® international community
  • Maintain the Memorandum of Understanding with the ATLS® Subcommittee of the ACS COT.
