ANZ Chapter of the American College of Surgeons

The Australia and New Zealand Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) was established to promote the objectives of the ACS in the Australasian region and to allow a strong link between the colleges in promoting the care of surgical patients.

Chapter objectives

The objectives of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) are to:

  • elevate standards of surgery;
  • establish standards of competency and character;
  • educate public and professionals on training in surgery.

Activities

The Chapter allows a strong link between the colleges in promoting the care of surgical patients. The Chapter in conjunction with the ACS funds an annual travelling fellowship for a young American surgeon to visit the Annual Scientific Congress (ASC), the Hugh Johnston ANZ ACS Travelling Scholarship for Younger Fellows, the John Buckingham Travelling Fellowship for trainees, as well as allowing the Chapter President to attend the Annual Clinical Congress of the ACS.

Latest news from the American College of Surgeons

As part of the COVID-19: Surgeons Toolkit for Discussions with Patients, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has developed additional resources to help surgeons communicate with their patients about the steps hospitals are taking to ensure a safe surgical experience. these include:

Preparing to Have Surgery during the Time of COVID-19 - ACS guidance to talk with your surgeon about returning to the health care facility;

Surgeon-Patient Discussion Worksheet -  To prepare for your discussion with patients about having surgery during the time of COVID-19, use this worksheet to fill in your answers before you meet.

To help communicate this message to patients in your chapter area, ACS has adapted several of these resources into a separate toolkit for ACS chapters.
