Overview

The high standard of surgical expertise in Colorectal Surgery is fostered and maintained through a close working relationship with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ). The Post Fellowship training program for the specialty is a collaboration between the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the CSSANZ, and has been since Colorectal Surgery was established as a sub-specialty.

Activities

Mark Killingback Prize

Awarded annually for the best scientific paper presented by a Surgical Education and Training (SET) Trainee or Younger Fellow (within 10 years of receiving Fellowship) at the Annual Scientific Congress (ASC) on an area related to colon and rectal surgery. The prize allows for travel (return airfare, meeting registration and accommodation) to present the winning paper at the meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) the following year.

Annual Scientific Congress

Scientific and education programs are run at the ASC. The Sections' Annual Business Meeting is also held at the ASC.

Partnering with CSSANZ

The Section partners with CSSANZ and other organizations at the following meetings:

  • Tripartite Meeting, Paris 2025

Post Fellowship Training Program

The Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) Post Fellowship Training Program in Colorectal Surgery regulations were approved by Council in 1992 and accreditation of the program under the current PFET process was formalised in March 2016. The Colorectal Surgery PFET program is overseen by the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery (ANZTBCRS) and provides training in both Australia and New Zealand. Details of the program, the positions available, and the application process may be found at the CSSANZ website at the links below.

Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) - Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) form

The ANZ Conjoint DOPS forms for Colonoscopy and Upper GI Endoscopy have been developed through collaboration between endoscopists from different specialties and backgrounds across Australia and New Zealand. The aim is to improve consistency of training across the diverse range of training situations in Australia and New Zealand. The content has been agreed by the participating organisations, and also provides the basis for the content of the online training tools being developed by some of the participating groups.

The Colonoscopy and Endoscopy forms are modifiable PDF which can be typed into and saved or printed.

For more information, please contact the team via email.
