Selection Regulations may be changed from year to year and cannot be relied on for the intakes conducted in future years for the SET Program. Any regulations for the SET Program from any previous years are not applicable and cannot be relied on for meeting the SET Program requirements for the 2028 intake unless specifically stated in the Selection Regulations.
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Training Committee and its staff will not enter into any form of advice, pre-scoring or interpretation of the Regulations outside of the formal application and scoring process.2027 Registration and application dates
Registration Opens: 12 noon (AEDT) - Tuesday, 5 January 2027
Registration Closes: 12 noon (AEDT) - Friday, 29 January 2027
Applications Open: 12 noon (AEDT) - Monday, 15 February 2027
Applications Close: 12 noon (AEDT) - Wednesday, 24 March 2027
Applicants are responsible for ensuring their application is complete and correct at the time of submission.
Once an application is submitted, it cannot be changed.
Maximum Attempts: Commencing with applications submitted in 2026 for the 2027 intake, applicants will be allowed a maximum of three eligible attempts for selection into the Cardiothoracic Training Program. Please refer to the current Selection Regulations for details on what constitutes an eligible attempt.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO FUTURE SET APPLICATIONS REGARDING THE CLINICAL EXAMINATION:
In consultation with the Committee of Surgical Education and Training and other Surgical Specialties, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Training Committee has determined that the Clinical Examination will no longer be a prerequisite for application to SET Selection in 2027 for the 2028 intake.

Announcement of offers
Announcement of offers to successful applicants will be made by the end of July 2027. Any final offers will be made by 12 November 2027.
Past offers
In 2020 there was no selection process
In 2021 six (6)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2022.
In 2022 seven (7)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2023.
In 2023 six (6)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2024.
In 2024 nine (9)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2025.
In 2025 eight (8)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2026.
In 2026 nine (9)* Trainees were appointed into the SET Program to commence in 2027.
